What you need to know
Building your own Yurt can be a rewarding and satisfying experience. All our Yurts are available as Owner Builder Kits and come ready to go with helpful instructions to guide you. Our Yurts come prefabricated in sections and panels and are more akin to a large assembly job than a building project.
Our smaller Yurts such as the 4.2m and basic 5.1m designs can be readily erected by 3 or 4 capable people with some DIY experience. However, the larger Yurts such as the 6.1m and larger designs can be heavier and more complex and these projects should not be underestimated. If you have significant DIY experience in all aspects of a building project from forming concrete, carpentry, erecting heavy frameworks, managing other tradies and project managing, then you will probably enjoy the process. However, if you have limited experience you may wish to have Goulburn Yurtworks erect it for you. Alternatively you may engage your preferred builder.
Owner builder requirements
Each state and territory has its own requirements for Owner Builders. NSW, the ACT and Queensland require that you complete an owner-builder course. Owner Builders are legally responsible for their project and in addition to using licensed electricians and plumbers may be required to use other licensed contractors depending on where you are located and the value of the work. You will be required to ensure all such matters are complied with and may incur a penalty and be required to fix any problems if you fail to meet these requirements. We do not wish to discourage our clients from being owner builders. However, we would advise against it unless you have the appropriate skills and experience, are prepared to assume the responsibilities of managing the project and have the time.
